Joanna Everett: What Makes A Work Experience Candidate Stand Out

When I’m scouring through our work experience applications for those who want to dip their toe into the mortgage world, I’m not expecting them to reel off the current Bank of England base rate or talk me through the complete home buying process.

What I’m really looking for is potential, personality, and the right attitude. I want to see genuine curiosity about what we do. The mortgage industry isn’t just about numbers, it’s about helping people make one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives. If an applicant has taken the time to understand what a broker actually does (and hasn’t confused us with estate agents!), that’s already a strong start. Enthusiasm stands out. Ask questions. Show interest. Be engaged.

Professionalism matters too. This is a regulated, client-facing industry built on trust.

Taking the time to actually research our firm, emailing us from your own email address (Mum and Dad can only help so much) and clearly communicating why you’re in contact with us shows maturity and self-awareness. Clients are trusting us with their income, their homes, and their future plans. If you can demonstrate responsibility, initiative and integrity, you are already ahead of the game.

Attention to detail is another big one. Mortgages involve documentation, compliance checks, deadlines, and precise information. Small errors can cause big problems. If you haven’t proofread your email, call us the wrong company or don’t really know what you’re applying for, your application naturally finds its way further down the pile.

Strong communication skills are essential. Mortgage advice isn’t about talking at people - it’s about guiding them. Clients may feel nervous, confused, or overwhelmed. The ability to explain something clearly, ask thoughtful questions, and actively listen is invaluable. Even during work experience, I notice how applicants interact with the team, how they respond to feedback, and how confidently they express themselves.

I also value resilience and a willingness to learn. The mortgage world can be fast-paced and sometimes challenging. Deals fall through. Lenders change criteria. Clients change their minds. I want to see individuals who don’t crumble under pressure, who stay positive, and who view mistakes as learning opportunities rather than setbacks.

Another quality that really stands out is initiative. Don’t wait to be told everything. If you’ve finished a task, ask what else you can help with. Offer to sit in on calls. Take notes, don’t just nod. And please don’t sit on TikTok until you’re given something else to do. Show me you’re thinking ahead. Work experience isn’t about ticking a box, it’s about showing that you want to be in the room.

Technical knowledge can be taught. Qualifications can be achieved. But attitude, work ethic, and energy…that’s what creates a quality adviser. When I see those qualities in an applicant, I don’t just see someone looking for work experience. I see someone who could build a long-term, successful career in the mortgage and finance industry.
